Cannelton, Indiana - Walter L. Matheny, 88, passed away on March 31, 2021. He was born on May 28, 1932, in Bremen, Kentucky, son of Everett E. and Winnie D. (Moore) Matheny. He was united in marriage in Shawneetown, Illinois on January 29, 1955 to Guy Edith "Pete" Cunningham, who preceded him in death in 2018. Walter was an Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He enjoyed singing; particularly traditional country music, camping and traveling, especially with his daughters' former band, "Sassy". Walter was a U. S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He had owned and operated Kindy Paving for several years. Walter truly enjoyed his job, his daughters fondly remembering him pointing out roads he had paved while on drives. Surviving are his daughters, Penny Hardman (Larry), Santa Claus and Angela Masterson (Randy), Tell City; sister, Brenda Carlisle, Atlanta, Michigan; grandchildren, Jared Hardman (Jennifer), Mariah Hildreth (Skyler), Meredith Parks (Scott), Tommy Hardman (Dawn), Wesley Cantner (Katherine Gries) and Lauren Cantner; great grandchildren, Brock Hardman, Madilyn and Audrey Hildreth, Taylor, Presley, Willow and Emery Parks, Cassie and Logan Hardman and great-great grandson, Jayse Hardman. Walter is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Guy Edith "Pete" Matheny and a sister, Dorothy Liggett. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. President Billy Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in Grapevine Cemetery in Madisonville, Kentucky at 2:00 PM CST. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00-7:00 PM at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel and 9:00-10:00 AM at the church on Saturday. Please know a mask is to be worn while visiting the funeral home and social distancing is to be practiced. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association.
