Sean Schlachter

"There is a superhero in all of us...we just need the courage to put on the cape" -Superman Tell City, Indiana Sean H. Schlachter, 46, of Owensboro, passed away surrounded by family and loved ones on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Sean was born in Tell City, Indiana on Oct. 7, 1972 and was the son of Larry Schlachter and Nancy "Darlene" (Blake) Sabelhaus. Sean was a 1991 graduate of Cannelton High School and served and was honorably discharged from the Indiana National Guard. Sean and his wife Kelly Anne (Humphrey) Schlachter were married 22 years and had a son, Erik, and a daughter, Emmy. Sean's wife and children were the light of his life and one of his reasons for being. Sean was a devoted Daviess County High School Band of Pride dad and enjoyed Emmy's color guard and concert performances. A retired Owensboro Police Department Officer with 19 years of service, Sean was well known as a DARE officer for Owensboro Public Schools. Sean's work with OPS included promoting the Character Counts! program, Fathers Matter and more. Sean and fellow OPD Officer Mike Roby began the Camp KOPS program for at-risk fourth and fifth graders, giving them a residential camping experience focused on team building and leadership skills fostering positive structure. Sean was also extremely involved in local youth sports, spending time on the coaching staff for Owensboro United, Owensboro Catholic High School Boys' Soccer, little league baseball and more. He also was an announcer for DCHS Boys' Soccer and a past president of Daviess County Youth Soccer. Sean enjoyed Star Wars, NASCAR racing (including meeting his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon), and Marvel comics and movies. He also enjoyed hockey and the outdoors. Sean and Kelly were passionate dog parents of their Weimaraner Louie, fostering and rescuing Weimaraners for Louisville Weimaraner Rescue. Sean was also a Jeep enthusiast. Sean is survived by his wife and children; by his father and stepmother, Larry and Sarah (Wells) Schlachter; and mother and stepfather Frank Sr. and Nancy "Darlene" Sabelhaus; step-brothers, Justin Sabelhaus of Jacksonville, Florida, and Frank Sabelhaus Jr. of Tell City. He is also survived by Amie Walters, who he thought of as his, and her two sons Shelton and Jeffery, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The Schlachter Family wishes to express its gratitude to the Hospice of Western Kentucky staff at The Heartford House. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Owensboro Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #16 for use in Owensboro youth programs, or to Louisville Weimaraner Rescue. Envelopes for donations will be available at the visitation and funeral. Visitation will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at Owensboro Middle School, North Campus, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, at Huber Funeral Home at 1139 12th Street in Tell City. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. at Huber Funeral Home in Tell City, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Tell City.
