Robert Rutherford

Cannelton, Indiana Robert L. ""Bob"" Rutherford, 75, passed away at 5:10 PM Monday, December 26, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro, Kentucky. Bob was born in Cannelton on August 12, 1930, son of the late Robert G. and Bertha F. (Buckel) Rutherford. Also preceding him in death was a son, Robert J. Rutherford in 1962. Bob was a 1948 graduate of Cannelton High School and was united in marriage to the former Mary Hilgenhold on September 11, 1954, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City. Bob was a retired brick mason. He learned the masonry trade from his father at a very young age. At age 27, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In 1965, he and his family moved back to Cannelton where he worked for Conner Construction Company. In 1976, he became self employed as Rutherford Masonry where he continued his trade until December, 2004. He had worked as a brick mason for sixty-two years. Bob was a member and past fire chief of the Cannelton Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post #142, was serving on the Cannelton Utilities Board, and was a member, porter and past pastoral council president of St. Michael Catholic Church. Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary, a son, Jeff Rutherford of Bloomington, Indiana, two daughters, Ann Sullivan, Sarasota, Florida, Susan Smith, Corydon, Indiana, a sister, Helen Rutherford, Tell City, Indiana, and five grandchildren, Derek Robert, Dustin and Michelle Smith, Eddie and Kevin Sullivan. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM EST Friday, December 30, 2005 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Cannelton with burial in St. Michael Cemetery. Rev. Barnabas Gillespie, OSB, will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday and from 9:00AM until10:30AM Friday at Huber Funeral Home, 129 N. 6th Street, Cannelton, Indiana, where a parish prayer service will be held at 7:45 PM Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church.
