Robert N. Whitehead

Rome, Indiana –

Robert N. Whitehead, 95, of Rome, died Thursday, October 19,2023, at Brickyard Nursing Home in Tell City.

He was born on December 23, 1927 in a log cabin near German Ridge, son of Rupert Friedel and Agnes Elizabeth (Hendershot) Whitehead.

After graduating from Cannelton High School in 1946, he worked for his uncle at Whitehead Pharmacy in Louisville before serving his country in the United States Army. Robert was an Army scout, wounded on Heartbreak Ridge in Korea, receiving the Purple Heart. When he returned home, he married Betty Lou Seifert on July 7,1956 at Rome Methodist Church.

Robert was a 4-H leader for many years and was a lifelong Perry County farmer. He served as Tobin Township Trustee for eight years and in the 1960’s, he was very proud of his working with other Perry County trustees, who pooled their resources, to create Perry Central School Corporation. Robert served as a member of their first school board, later driving a school bus for eleven years. He also was one of several former trustees chosen to assess land reparations in preparation for the location of the new Interstate 64 running through northern Perry County.

Robert was a former member of the Rome Volunteer Fire Department, and a past president of the Rome Community Center. He was also an active member of Rome Methodist Church.

Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Betty Whitehead; sons, Brian Whitehead, London, Kentucky and Barry Whitehead (Carolyn) Rome, grandchildren, Devin (Tammy) Haley (Jamie), Lora (Kirk), Joe, Jim, Blair (Jacob), and Kenny (Samantha) and great-grandchildren, Daetan, Paisley, Mason, Lydia and Cheyenne, and several step grand and step great grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his son, Larry; granddaughters, Sarah and Erin; great granddaughter, Daelee and brothers, Donald, Rupert Friedel Jr., Eric, Fred and Leon Whitehead.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, with burial in Rowe Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 6:00 PM on Sunday and from 9:00 AM until service time on Monday. Pastor Ann Skiba will officiate.
