Raymond Batie

Tell City, Indiana - Raymond Wesley "Ray" Batie, 86, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Perry County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, September 3, 1926, son of the late Edward and Marjorie (Williams) Batie. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Bernice Miller, three brothers, Alfred, Ben and Calvin Batie, a granddaughter, Julie Batie and a daughter-in-law, Victoria S. Batie. He was a US Army veteran serving in WWII. Ray, who was united in marriage to Jean Webb in 1946, worked for Holland Dairy Foods for over 40 years and drove a school bus for Tell City- Troy Township School Corporation for 20 years. Along with his family, he owned and operated Jean-Rae's restaurant for 11 years. He was the pastor of the Liberty Church from 1975 to 2007, and was the founder and director of the Harvest House Men's Shelter and Meal Program from 1979 to 2007. Ray dedicated much of his life to the homeless and down-and-out in this area. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jean Batie; son, Steven R. Batie, Tell City; daughter, Barbara J. Masterson (Jack), Tell City; three sisters, Mary Jo Rice, Tell City, Blanche DeJarnette, Hawesville, and Janice Fry (Jim) , Michigan; five grandchildren, Amy Batie, Scot Batie, Amos Masterson (Gina), Derika Masterson, and Breanna Casebolt (Jason); sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Funeral services will be 12:00 PM Friday, August 2, 2013 at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, with burial in Grandview Cemetery, where there will be military graveside rites conducted. Jack Masterson will officiate. Visitation will be 4:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday and from 10:00AM until service time Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
