Nolan Williams

Mount Pleasant, Indiana On August 11, 2020, James Nolan Williams went to be with the Lord. He was born on July 27, 1932 in Mt. Pleasant, Indiana, son of the late Lee Roy and Freda (James) Williams. He attended elementary school at Galey School in Magnet, Beech Grove School in Dexter 5th-7th, Elder School in Mt. Pleasant in 8th grade, and Oil Township near Bandon 9th-12th and graduated in 1950. He graduated from Purdue University's Agriculture Short Course and then continued to work on the Williams Dairy Farm in Mt. Pleasant. He was drafted into the army in 1956 and attended basic training in Fort Ord in California and was later deployed to Germany from January 1957-April 1958. Nolan married the love of his life, Joyce Ann Connor, on September 21, 1957. They raised a family of three children on the family farm. Nolan was a family man who always put his family first and loved spending time with them. Later in life, he worked at the Branchville Correctional Facility as a night officer and as an insurance agent for Modern Woodmen Insurance. Nolan was very involved with the community and loved helping children. He was a 4-H member for eleven years and Rural Youth as a child. After he finished 4-H, he became a leader of the Mount Pleasant 4-H Club for 55 years, from 1952-2007, also serving as a member of the 4-H Council and Livestock Committees. He was the Farm Bureau Incorporated County President for many years and was an activist for helping farmers. As a farmer, his family farm, Williams Brothers, earned the Soil Conservationist of the Year in 1985. Other organizations he was involved in were Child Abuse Prevention Committee, Perry Central Volunteer Readers and Cattleman's Association. An avid story teller, Nolan could tell stories with many details of long ago. He loved reading, especially cowboy stories, watching rodeos and having family together. His stories will be passed down to many generations in the future. Nolan was also an outdoorsman that loved to explore in the woods and drive county roads. He enjoyed helping children, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, showing dairy cattle and making maple syrup. He was known for his crafty leather work and passed that trait to some of his grandsons. Church was a vital part of his life, as he was a member of Lilly Dale Church of Christ in Gatchel. There, he served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school treasurer. Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Joyce Ann Williams; their children, Phyllis Tingley (Joe), Brian Williams (Jeannie) and Pam Hilgenhold (J.P.); grandsons, Matthew and Patrick Williams, Levi, Luke and Lane Hilgenhold and great granddaughters, Emma, Macy and Leah Williams and the first great grandson due in December. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Donald Williams and granddaughter-in-law, Shana Williams. Nolan loved and was loved deeply. He will be truly missed, but is in peace and comfort in heaven. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Lilly Dale Church of Christ in Gatchel. Bro. Eddie Olberding will officiate. Burial will follow in Horton Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, with military rites. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00-7:00 PM at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel and Saturday from 9:00AM-10:00 AM at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Lilly Dale Church of Christ or Perry County 4-H Council.
