Michael Mattingly

Tobinsport, Indiana -  

Michael Lee Mattingly, 59, passed away on January 8, 2025, surrounded by love and adoration, at his home in Cherokee Village, Arkansas. He was born in Evansville, Indiana, near Mount Vernon, where some of the Mattingly family continue to reside.  

Michael was a great athlete and especially passionate about baseball. He led the West Memphis Blue Devils to the 1982 Arkansas State Finals as their ace pitcher. As a young man he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.  

He attended Arkansas Tech University where he studied engineering and drafting. He partnered with Tim Byrd (his catcher) at Able Express Courier Service as the Chief Operations Officer in Memphis, Tennessee. His next career move would take him to management at Temple Gypsum of West Memphis, Arkansas before being hired as Quality Control Manager at Wabash Steel located in Vincennes, Indiana which is a division of Kokosing Road Construction. Wabash Steel was known for their work in steel bridge girders, including the new Ohio River bridge connecting near Rockport, Indiana and near Maceo, Kentucky. He saw this project finished prior to his move to Cherokee Village. Michael was the Chief Water Operator for the Cherokee Village Water Works. He and his wife “Charlie” settled in Cherokee Village to improve on his beloved game of golf.  

Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Charlene "Charlie" (Weatherholt) Mattingly; a daughter, Madison (Landon) Scarbrough (whom he so adores); dad, Jerry Garrett; brothers, Chuck Mattingly, Jerry (Laura) Garrett, Steve (Charleen) Mattingly; sisters, Margaret Mattingly, Melissa (Richard "Duke") Garrett and Misty (James) Glover. He is also survived by his wife’s family, L. Darlene (Von) Huff, D.L. (Shirley) Weatherholt, Ruthie Weatherholt, Ruth Ella Leinenbach, Charlie (Margie) Weatherholt, Darlene (Jeff) Gottwald. Michael takes great delight in his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who are so dear to his heart.   

He is preceded in death by his mother, Anita Sue (Rouse) Garrett and father, Milburn "Shorty" Mattingly; brother Richard "Duke" Garrett and sister, Heather Mattingly.  

Funeral services for Michael will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, with burial in Lamb Cemetery in Tobinsport.  Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time on Wednesday.  

In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider a donation to Communities First, benefiting the underprivileged children of Sharp County, Arkansas. This charity’s work provides second chances by educating young parents and reuniting children with their families. Michael strongly believes in and values this mission’s work. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
