Cannelton, Indiana - Mary Waddy Verden, 89, passed away peacefully on July 4th, in the presence of her family. She was born in Indianapolis on July 16, 1921. Her parents were the late George and Mary F. (Luck) Keever. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Fulk; her first husband, Charles Waddy in 1997 and her second husband, Merle Verden in 2006. A graduate of Indiana University with a degree in nursing, Mary retired from the Tell City Clinic and Perry County Memorial Hospital where she was a nurse and known for her kindness and compassion. Throughout her life, Mary was known for her smile and cheerful demeanor. She enjoyed listening to a variety of music and being read to as her vision declined. While living in Cannelton, Mary was a Sunday School teacher at St. John's United Church of Christ and former president of the St. John UCC Women's Guild and Woman's Travel Club. She was also a former member of the Cannelton Library Board, Historic Cannelton, Inc., Perry County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and St. John's UCC Council. Since returning to Evansville in 2007, she was a member of St. John's UCC East. Surviving are her children, Mary Kay Heath (Bart), Newburgh; Kenneth Waddy (Carolyn) Franklin, Tennessee; and Karl Waddy (Nancy), Chesapeake, Virginia; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel, with burial in New Cliff Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time on Saturday. Rev. Kenneth Townsend will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Evansville Association for the Blind or St. John's UCC East in Evansville.
