Leonard Etienne

Leopold, Indiana Leonard Joseph Etienne, 89, passed away at 9:25 a.m. on August 25, 2010, in Tell City. He was born on April 13, 1921, to the late Charles and Elizabeth (Watson) Etienne. On May 13, 1947, he married Pearl Agatha James and they made their home on Leopold Circle Road in Leopold Township where they raised nine children. Leonard was a 1939 graduate of Oil Township High School and retired from Tell City Chair Company in 1986. He was a lifetime member of St. Augustine Catholic Church of Leopold. He enjoyed bird feeding, gardening, baseball, basketball, football, country music, and playing the guitar. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, on June 22, 2003; a son, Larry Joseph Etienne on September 15, 1973; a son-in-law, David Schlachter on October 10, 2004; grandsons, Vincent Schlachter on January 11, 1976, and Elijah Etienne on December 31, 2002; a sister and brother, Myrtle Etienne and Charles Etienne on January 30, 1911; a sister, Hazel James on August 13, 1940; a sister, Sister Geraldine (Mary Opal) Etienne on August 21, 1999. He is survived by his children: Christine Schlachter of Mariah Hill; Leona Keller and her husband, Alan, of Newburgh; Mary Clark and her husband, Mark, of Tell City; Frances Evans and her husband, Alvin, of Tell City; David Etienne and his wife, Nancy, of Leopold; Ralph Etienne and his friend, Angela Pettito, of Loon Lake, New York; Irvin Etienne of Indianapolis, and Daniel Etienne and his wife, Sheryl, of Dale. Grandchildren: Brian Schlachter of Louisville, Kentucky; Brent Schlachter of Jasper; Scot Keller and his wife Tonia, of Mt. Vernon; Mark Keller and his wife, Jennifer, of Newburgh; Kathleen Nill and her husband, Ryan, of Indianapolis; Eric Clark and friend, Katrina Page, Tell City; Shannon Stiff and her husband, Grant, Tell City; Lesley Stallings and her husband, Ben, Tell City; Natalie Evans, Chicago, Illinois; Aaron Evans and his wife, Nora, New York, New York; Alexandria Etienne, Leopold; Zebulon, Maxwell, and Samson Etienne of Dale. Great-grandchildren: Noah, Hannah, Micah and Kennah Keller; Megan and Mason Keller; Isabell and Gavin Nill; Garrett, Alex, Cole, and Madelyn Stiff; and Brady Stallings. Sisters: Clarice James of Dubois, Marie James of Boonville, and Beatrice Aileen Rennie of Tell City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Leopold, at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) on Saturday, August 28, 2010. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City, on Friday, and from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Augustine Catholic Church.
