Joy Howell

Tell City, Indiana - Joy Ann Howell, 79, passed away September 10, 2017 at Golden Living Center in Tell City. Joy was born in Derby, Indiana on July 22, 1938 , the first of nine children, to the late Kenneth and Rebecca (Alvey) James. Also preceding her in death are her husband, Paris D. Howell in 1971; a daughter, Kathy Hammers; great grandchild Kieran Paauwe in infancy, and brothers, Bobby and Wayne James and Paul Michael in infancy. Joy was gifted with a servant's heart. She loved taking care of people. She worked helping others at various jobs throughout her life including being a teacher's aide for children with special needs at Perry Central Schools and being a caregiver at Res-Care. She completed her Licensed Practical Nursing degree in 1991 and worked at Scenic Hills Nursing Home and retired from Golden Living Center in 1994. Joy was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church where she served on the parish council and was involved with quilting and the Daughters of Isabella. She volunteered with the Perry County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Joy enjoyed yard sales and auctions, quilting crocheting and sewing. She loved gardening, planting flowers, genealogy and was an avid reader. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. A special accomplishment of Joy's was winning the Tri-State spelling bee in the 6th grade and going on to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. , where she met then vice president, Richard Nixon. Surviving are her children, Randy Howell (Chris), Marilyn Alvey (Ralph), Libby Baur (Tim), all of Tell City, step-son, Dennis Howell (Pat), Derby, eight grandchildren, Randy S. Howell (Heather), Dorothy Daum (Chad Hexamer), Holly Paauwe (Jon), Eric Alvey (Jessie), Andi Baur (Kyle Staats), Mika Howell, Denise Schilling (Don), and Dennis Wayne Howell ; 17 great grandchildren, Alyssa, Cameron, A.J., Cody, Emma, Jace, Maci, Tessa, Caiden, Avery, Alivia, Frankie, Jacob, Dalton, Emily, Dani, and Wade and one great great grandchild, Adalynn; sisters, Patty Shelton (Dale), Leavenworth, and Carol Kleaving (Steve), Tell City; brothers, Richard James, Derby, Denny James (Linda), Rome and Bill James (Penny), Tell City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, September 15, 2017 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Father Dennis Duvelius will officiate. Burial will follow in Lilly Dale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday and from 8:30 until 9:30 AM Friday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
