John was born in Tell City, Indiana on October 3, 1916, son of the late Frederick C. Ress and Jeanette Muelchi Ress. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, William, Walter and Earl Ress and one sister, Paula Ress Magee. John was a 1934 graduate of Tell City High School. He worked with his father at Frederick's Sheet Metal until the age of 20, then in 1937 started working at the Tell City Post Office. John was united in marriage on May 6, 1941 to the former Marieta Paulin, who survives. He was drafted into the Navy in 1945 and served as supervisor of the postal unit in Okinawa until his discharge in 1946 when he retuned to his position in Tell City. A talented painter and carver, he enjoyed his artistic creations and his connections with fellow artists. He was past president of the Lincoln Hills Arts and Crafts Association and was honored when his hand carved ducks were displayed at the St. Meinrad Archabbey Library. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and twenty-nine foreign countries. He enjoyed gardening, reading and collecting and refinishing antique furniture.John was a life-long member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Marieta Paulin Ress Three daughters, Marjo Howe, Corydon, Indiana Jane Kline and her husband, Lynn, Evansville, Indiana Mary Farley and her husband, Steve, Franklin, Kentucky One son, Tom Ress and his wife, Roberta Thorn Ress, Athens, Alabama Eight grandchildren, Jasin Howe, Sacramento, California Bridget Howe, New Haven, Connecticut Marjo Muir Wells, Sacramento, California Michael Ress, San Antonio, Texas Sara Ress Wittenberg, Fayetteville, Arkansas Elizabeth, John Louis and Stephen Farley, Franklin, Kentucky One great granddaughter, Amber Wells, Sacramento, California One sister, Jeanette Rippy and her husband, Amos, Tell City, Indiana A service to celebrate John's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Tell City with Rev. Lance Lackore presiding. Huber Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical United Church of Christ.
