John Noble

April 28, 1916 — November 30, 2016

Tell City, Indiana - John F. Noble, 100, passed away on November 30, 2016, at his home. He was born in Rockport on April 28, 1916, son of the late Jerry and Eda (Weisenberg) Noble. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Millie (Bristow) Noble; sister, Nellie Enlow; brothers, Jerry and Richard Noble and his second wife, Betty (Kinder) Noble. John was a 1934 graduate of Rockport High School where he excelled on the basketball court. After graduation, he went to work at Ken-Rad, later becoming a foreman at General Electric. In 1956, he and his brother, Jerry, founded Noble Brothers Grocery, located in the 1400 block of 12th Street. Later, a larger store was built on Highway 37, but was lost in a fire. The present Noble's IGA was then built where it continues to be operated by the third generation of the Noble family. John worked alongside his son, John H. Noble, for several years before retiring from the family's business in the late 1970's. Customers and friends complimented him as a hardworking, fair and honest businessman. "John, Sr." and his wife, Millie, spent some of their retired years in the Florida Keys, always looking forward to family and friends visiting. He found much pleasure in owning thoroughbred horses that he himself trained and raced. John was also known to enjoy a few hands of poker in his time. John experienced many things during his 100 year life, none more meaningful to him than time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who lovingly called him "grandad". Surviving him are his daughter, Barbara Kast; son, John H. Noble and his wife, Linda; seven grandchildren, Kevin Kast (Dana), Kraig Kast (Helen), Kamela Krouskous (Steve), Jerri Clark (Tom), Brian Noble (Wendy), Wesley Noble (Laura) and Merrie Redwanski (John); sixteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM CST on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Evangelical United Church of Christ with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. J T Hills will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Huber Funeral Home has been entrusted to arrange the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical United Church of Christ or to a favorite charity.
