James E. "Jim" Snyder, 79, passed away April 20, 2018. He was born in Grant County, Indiana February 14, 1939 son of the late Edward H. and Genola C. (VanHoosier) Snyder. He was united in marriage November 17, 1961 in Gas City, Indiana to Mary Y. Freeman who survives him. Jim loved his country flag, was a 24 year veteran, serving in the Navy, Army and National Guard. Jim was one of the first to attend the Police Academy. He served the City of Cannelton as First Class Patrolman and Police Chief, and was a member of the Cannelton Volunteer Fire Department. Jim worked various jobs in the county and retired from General Electric in 2000. He had also been a member of Cannelton American Legion and Jaycees. He loved hunting, fishing and raising a garden. His favorite was raising watermelons and tomatoes. Jim looked forward to spending time spent with his grandson, especially summer visits. Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mayor Mary Y. Snyder, daughter, M. Annette Mirantes (Luis). Bethesda, Maryland and their son, Gabriel E. Mirantes, sisters, Debra Snyder and Janet Snyder and brother, Lee Allen Snyder (Cindy). Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Monday, April 23, 2018 at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel with burial in Schraner Cemetery, where there will be military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 6:00 PM on Sunday and from 9:00 until 11:00 AM Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to Cannelton Police Department or Fire Department.
