James Harris

Derby, Indiana James L. "Jim" Harris, 72, passed away March 2, 2017 at his home in Derby. He was born in Newburgh ,Indiana on July 22,1944 to the late Edward Lee and Rosella Marie (Carter) Harris. Also preceding him in death was a wife, Karen Harris, a sister, Rosalee Sykes, a brother Edward Arnold Harris and a brother in infancy. An Army veteran, Jim was stationed in Korea with the First Cav Division and later transferred to the Vietnam War where he was under the 101st Airborne Division. He was married on July 8, 2000 to the former Susan Knobeloch. Jim retired in 2008 after 25 years at Branchville Correctional Facility where he was a Captain. He was a member of Alton American Legion Post #133, V.F.W. Post # 2939, Moose Lodge #1424 and Rome Masonic Lodge #133. Jim enjoyed boating on the Ohio, 4-wheeler riding, watching old westerns and spending time with family, friends and his Boston Terriers, Tessa and Lola. Jim loved to be around people. They were drawn to his infectious smile and witty comments. Surviving are his wife, Susan Harris, Derby; sisters, Bettye Schwoeppe, Houston, TX and Cora Marie Martin, Newburgh; mother in law, Betty L. Hilgers, Tell City; extended family, Kevin and Janet Coon and their son, Bryce, Fordsville, KY, and very dear friends, Tom and Pam Spinner, Derby; several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Derby Community Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Perry County Animal Shelter, Perry County Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, or Derby Community Center.
