Cannelton, Indiana –
Jack W. Harris, 93, passed away on October 7, 2024, at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Cleaton, Kentucky on March 19, 1931. After his high school graduation, he served his country in the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict. Jack was married on July 1, 1950, to Joye M. Devine. He had worked for General Electric, Alcoa, and then at Willamette Industries where he worked as an electrical supervisor, retiring in 1996. He also owned and operated Harris Oil and Exploration, drilling oil and water wells where he worked alongside his son, Jonathan. Jack’s years of drilling with Jonathan were some of his fondest memories.
Jack was a member of Hawesville Baptist Church, V.F.W Post #2939, Tell City Masonic Lodge #623 (where he was a 33rd Degree Mason) and Scottish Rite.
He was very civic minded and always active in his community, serving the citizens of Cannelton as a city councilman for two terms (two years as president) and was a Cannelton School Board member for 29 years, serving 24 of those as president.
Jack enjoyed working in his shop at all hours of day and night and in his later years he enjoyed league bowling.
Surviving are his children, Laura Susan Pryor (John), Jill Newton Phillips, Melanie Maffia (Frank), Jonathan Harris (Debbie) and Ali Sandage (David); grandchildren, Laura Sheffield (Paul), Rachael McDaniel (Larry Joe), Leah Riley (Justin), Emily Newton (Randy Kleeman), Amanda Nies, Jennifer Perkins and Shelby Sandage; 14 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, William “Orlie” Harris and Eunice F. Harris Draper; wife, Joye Harris, a sister, Corlean Hammond and a son-in-law, Jim Phillips.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM CDT on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel. Burial will follow in New Cliff Cemetery with military rites.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday with a Masonic service beginning at 7:00 PM and 9:00 -11:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home in Cannelton.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital or River’s Edge Animal Shelter.
