Tell City, Indiana - Irene Gelarden, 87, passed away on January, 1, 2015, at her home in rural Tell City. She was born in Perry County on April 24, 1927. Her parents were the late Oliver and Clara (Peter) Hagedorn. Also preceding Irene in death was her sister, Theresa Rose Hagedorn and brothers, Albert and Ed Hagedorn. A 1946 graduate of Tell City High School, Irene was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church where she was always busy cooking in the kitchen during the church's shooting match. She retired from Abbey Press where she worked in customer service. She was a member of "Bristow" Card Club and enjoyed gardening, fishing, I.U. basketball and socializing with friends and neighbors. Nothing made her more happy than spending time with her children and grandchildren. Irene was united in marriage at St. Mark Catholic Church on September 9, 1947, to Merl Gelarden. They were married for 67 years, raising eight children, twenty eight grandchildren, thirty six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Surviving are her husband, Merl Gelarden; daughters, Ella Rose "Rosie" Scott (Mike)Fulda, Susan Carpenter (Devin), Ferdinand and Mary Jo Waninger (Larry), St. Meinrad; sons, David Gelarden ("Jody"), Cannelton, Stephen Gelarden (Beth Faust), Troy, John Gelarden, Tell City, Pat Gelarden, Cloverport, Kentucky and Phil Gelarden (Cathy), Cannelton; sisters, Louise Mattingly, Zionsville and Dorothy Beckman, Mariah Hill; brothers, John M. Hagedorn, (Clara Mae), Fort Branch and L. Joe Hagedorn (Judy), Tell City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM CST on Monday, January 5, 2015, at St. Isidore Catholic Church, near Bristow, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 PM on Sunday and from 8:30 until 10:00 AM on Monday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. Rev. Jeremy King, OSB, and Rev. Adrian Burke, OSB, will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Isidore Catholic Church.
