George Lorenz

October 4, 1937 — February 11, 2013

Rome, Indiana George Joseph Lorenz, 75, passed away Monday morning, February 11, 2013, at Hosparus, Norton Pavilion in Louisville, KY. George was born October 4, 1937, in Chicago, IL, to the late George and Laverne Lorenz. Also preceding him in death were his stepmother Jo Gruver Chapman, sisters Gloria Lindauer and Carole Lorenz, and brother Art Lorenz. George was a 1955 graduate of Tell City High School and a US Navy veteran, 2nd Class Petty Officer, on the USS Intrepid, 1955-1959. He retired from working life in 2003 after serving as a college rep for Lincoln Technical Institute as well as a varied career in sales, insurance and human resources. He previously lived in Chicago, IL, and St. Louis, MO, until he retired to Rome, IN. George was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and Hoosier Heights Country Club. George was married August 13, 1966, to the former Judith Loch who survives. Other survivors include his children Tonia Lorenz of Chicago, IL; Christine (Mike) Laatz of Chapel Hill, NC; Matthew (Kathleen Vedock) Lorenz of Hereford, AZ; and Betsy (Leo) Oei of Edmund, OK; his sisters Donna Groves of Rome; Barbara Burns of Austin; and brother Jim Lorenz of Midland, TX; his grandchildren Justin, Ryan and Lily Laatz, and Amelia, Reagan and Oliver Oei; and his many nieces and nephews. Besides his family and helping others, George was passionate about golf: playing, the game itself, the rules, different courses, its history and its players. He also enjoyed his music, fishing, history, traveling, a good cup of coffee, and his dogs Ralph and Fizz. He was a consummate Republican and never avoided a political discussion. George wanted to be remembered as a gentlemen and a scholar, which he was. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, February 15, 2013 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City at 10:00 AM followed by burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, where there will be military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #2939. Rev. Tom Richstatter, OFM will officiate. Visitation will be at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel from 3:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday and from 8:30 until 9:30 AM Friday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice in George's name.
