Magnet, Indiana - Gary L. Harpe, 77, passed away on Tuesday, December 02, 2014, at Owensboro Regional Health in Owensboro, Kentucky. He was born in Perry County on April 17, 1937, son of the late James and Bessie (Young) Harpe. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Edward Earl Harpe and James Casper Harpe; sisters, Jessie Allard and Ada W. "Billie" York and a half sister, Virginia Davison. For 32 years in Cincinnati, Ohio, Gary was an inspiring sixth grade teacher at Covedale School, where he received "Distinguished Teacher of the Year" award among many others. While in Cincinnati, he was one of the choreographers for the traveling Sweet Adelines , and was active with barbershop quartets, and theatrical productions. Gary's love for his family and the stories of their heritage guided him toward becoming a keen genealogical researcher which led to his membership in the Sons of American Revolution and The Society of Indiana Pioneers. He enjoyed taking great pride in his yard as an avid gardener. Surviving him are several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gary was proud to have a great, great, great nephew. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, in Leopold, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in Derby. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00 PM CST on Friday at Huber Funeral Home, 1139 12th Street, Tell City, and from 9:00 AM CST until service time on Saturday at the church. Rev. Brian Esarey will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Cemetery, Derby, Indiana, in care of Huber Funeral Home.
