Floyd Freeman

July 26, 1939 — August 9, 2021

Tell City, Indiana - Floyd Hershel Freeman, 82, of Indianapolis and formerly of Perry County, passed away on August 9, 2021. He was born in Cannelton, Indiana, on July 26, 1939, to the late Irvin and Lola (Turner) Freeman. He graduated from Cannelton High School in 1957, where he discovered his lifelong passion for music, in particular Dixieland jazz, and first displayed his indisputable talent as a trumpeter. Floyd played lead trumpet in many dance and concert bands, most recently as a member of the New Horizons Band of Indianapolis and the White River Jazz Band. Floyd worked as a mechanical designer for various industries in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky and later obtained his realtor and broker's licenses. He interrupted his career during the 1960s to serve his county in the United States Air Force and the Air Force Reserves, where he continued to share his musical ability by playing in and arranging music for the Drum and Bugle Corps. Floyd was an early adopter of organic gardening, sharing his healthful produce with friends and family, and even authored a booklet on vermicomposting (composting with earthworms). He was equally keen to share with others his thoughts on myriad topics ranging from politics to religion and back again, and is remembered for his unique storytelling ability. Without a doubt, his favorite audience was his family, especially his beloved granddaughter, Nia. Floyd is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Deanna; daughter, Sarah (Ian Stewart) Freeman; granddaughter, Nia Stewart; brother-in-law, Ralph Boerste; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, with visitation 12:00 until 2:00 PM. The family would appreciate your consideration of wearing a mask during visitation. The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made in the form of donations to St. Michael Catholic Church in Cannelton or New Horizons Band of Indianapolis.
