Eugene Heckel

July 27, 1929 — February 12, 2023

Tell City, Indiana Eugene Albert Heckel passed away on February 12, 2023 at the age of 93. Eugene was born July 27, 1929 to the late Walter and Hannah (Wolf) Heckel in Spencer County, Indiana and was named after his uncle, Albert Wolf. Eugene graduated from Chrisney High School in 1948 and afterwards worked for the Tell City Chair Company a short time while helping with farming activities. Eugene spoke often about helping his Uncle Albert with farming activities as a young boy during a time when farming was performed with more manual laborious methods. Eugene joined the Marine Corps in 1950 and was always proud of the time he spent at Quantico, VA and Camp Lejeune, NC. After serving in the Marines, Eugene came back to Tell City and worked for the Tell City Brickyard and Tell City Police Department. He then worked as a guard during the construction of Alcoa Warrick operations, and later took a permanent job at Alcoa where he worked in several departments before retiring after thirty-three years. Eugene married Naomi Chapple in 1951 and they enjoyed working and raising two sons together. Naomi passed away in 1988 and in 1992 Eugene married Anita Kramer. He will always be remembered for his strong work ethic, optimistic attitude, and general zest for life. Eugene enjoyed working on various projects such as landscaping, construction, gardening, and logging. Eugene was the most content when he had a chain saw, hammer, or a shovel in his hands. He always had a project he was working on and most times he was working on several projects at the same time, but Eugene still found time to travel and enjoy life with his wife and family. Travels to the Smokey Mountains, Florida, Niagara Falls, Colorado, Branson, Boston, Virginia, Washington DC, Michigan, and short trips in Indiana and Kentucky were all joyful times for him. Eugene also enjoyed taking part in his sons' school activities and sporting events, and was proud that both of his sons obtained college degrees. Working on projects with his sons were some of the most rewarding times for him. He will be missed by not only family and friends, but by the community as well, as he was always willing to help a friend or neighbor in need. A willingness to help aunts, uncles, and parents with their needs was always a priority to him. Eugene was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on several committees. Eugene maintained the church building and grounds for several years. Church and the Christian way of life were always important to Eugene. Eugene grew up during the depression era and lived through recessions, union strikes, health issues, and the loss of close family members, but he always persevered on with patience, integrity, compassion, and determination. Eugene was truly a resilient individual; a life well lived; well done good and faithful servant! Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Naomi, son Charles, brothers Bernard, Bruno, and Robert and sisters Bernice and Rosalee. Surviving is his wife Anita, son David, daughters-in-law Faye and Billie, granddaughters Aleshia, Ginny and Hannah, and great granddaughter Olivia.
