Ernestine Harris

Ernestine H. (Cummings) Harris, 96, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020, in New Albany. She was born in Rome on November 6, 1923, daughter of the late Ernest and Mabel Frances (Wegenast) Cummings. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Bert "Dale" Harris, a brother, William G. Cummings and his wife, Naomi. Ernestine attended Atherton's School in Louisville, an all-girls school before attending University of Louisville and Kentucky Wesleyan. She served her country in the U.S. Navy WAVES, and had worked as a clerk typist at the Pentagon. A homemaker most of her life, she and her husband had a farm near Rome when they lived in Perry County. Ernestine had served as Tobin Township Trustee and was a teaching assistant at Perry Central during that time. She had also worked in bookkeeping at Stewart's Department Store, formerly in Louisville. In more recent years, Ernestine enjoyed reading and working puzzles. Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Byrne (Mitchell); granddaughter, Lauren Byrne and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private with burial in Conner Cemetery near Derby. Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, will be handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Conner Cemetery.
