Doris Leistner

New Albany, Indiana Doris M. (Byrd) Leistner, 90, formerly of Tell City, passed away December 31, 2018 in New Albany, Indiana. She was born in English, Indiana on November 10, 1928, daughter of the late Russell and Lola (Apple) Byrd. Also preceding her in death was her husband Oscar L. Leistner, and son Steven Leistner. Doris was a 1946 graduate of Tell City High School, where she was Salutatorian. She was a former member of Evangelical United Church of Christ and Tri-Kappa. She had worked as a medical social worker for Perry County Memorial Hospital from 1972-1976. Doris became interested in genealogy more than 50 years ago and was appointed county historian for Perry County from 1981-1991, where she served as Past President and genealogy chairman. She also served as the chairman for the New Albany Bicentennial in 2013. The Indiana Historical Society awarded her the 1996 Honorary Member Award and the 2007 Eli Lilly Lifetime Achievement Award. Doris had conducted genealogy workshops in many Indiana counties, taught genealogy classes for Vincennes University and Indiana University, Indiana Historical Society, several local historical and genealogical societies and libraries and worked with individuals. She is survived by her two sons, Allen "Al" Leistner (Cheryl) , Panama City Beach, Florida and Brian Leistner (Arleen Schwab), Louisville, Kentucky; brother, Ralph Byrd, Elizabethtown, KY; two grandsons, Matthew Leistner, Floyd Knobs, Indiana and Patrick Leistner, Panama City Beach, Florida. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM CST Saturday, January 5, 2018 at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Pastor Jeff McCarn will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 PM EST on Friday at Kraft Funeral Home, 708 East Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM CST at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a public library of your choice.
