Tell City, Indiana - Donald David Howard, 90, passed away on August 27, 2015. Don was a 1943 graduate of Reitz High School and enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17. He was reassigned to the First Marine Corp Division during World War II as a radio operator. He fought in Peleliu and Okinawa, Japan. He was discharged in 1946. In 1947, he was united in marriage to Georgia Marie Bray in Evansville, Indiana. They were married for 59 years. He attended Evansville University and played basketball for the Evansville Purple Aces. Don then moved to California and graduated from UCLA and received his Master's Degree from USC. He coached all sports at Santa Clara High School in Oxnard, California, until 1955. A physical education teacher in the Pleasant Valley School District, he taught the fourth grade for two years, became an elementary school principal and also a junior high school principal. Don loved to play golf and go to casinos to play slot machines. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia. Survivors include his children, Don Howard, Jr., of New Zealand, Peggy Dann, of Santa Claus, Mike Howard, of Oxnard, California, Dustin Howard, of Goodyear, Arizona, Sue Berry of South West, Missouri, Joe Howard of Bonaire, Georgia and Martha Neary of Ventura, California. Also surviving are his fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and sisters who are twins, Mariruth Howard Datzman and Lynn Howard O'Brien. Don was a member of Knights of Columbus where in 1968 he had served as Grand Knight. He was also a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and a charter member of Marine Corp Chapter in Tell City. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. Following the visitation, there will be a reception to honor Don, at the American Legion Post #213, Highway 66, Tell City.
