Clyde Lagrange

Jasper, Indiana Clyde A. LaGrange, 96, formerly of St. Croix, died at 3:05 PM Sunday, July 31 at Brookside Nursing Home in Jasper. He was born July 7, 1915, near Apalona, Indiana, son of the late Oscar and Bertha (Doogs) LaGrange. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Saddler June 2, 1938, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold. He was also preceded in death by five younger brothers: Kermit, Edward, Everitt, Gerald, Mark, and Earl, who died in infancy. Clyde was a WWII veteran who served in the Coast Guard. He graduated from Leopold High School in 1932 and attended Central Normal College in Danville, Indiana to gain his teaching license. He attained a Master's degree from Indiana State University. He began his education career in Perry County at the one-room Winding Branch School in September 1933 and taught at several county grade schools, mainly sixth grade, until retiring from Perry Central Elementary in 1978. Clyde and Rosemary operated a grocery store and gas station in St. Croix from 1940 until 1970. He was an avid bass fisherman all of his life and an enthusiastic guitar player and music composer. He was active in supporting telephone, electric, and water services to northern Perry County. He was involved in the formation of the new Perry Central school buildings. Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Rosemary LaGrange; a son, Larry and his wife Jenny of Jasper; three grandchildren, Nathan, Aaron and Justin LaGrange and five great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM CDT Thursday, August 4 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in St. Croix with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Brian Esarey will officiate. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2939 will conduct military graveside rites. A meal will follow in the church hall. Visitation will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until service time. Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church.
