Tell City, Indiana - Charles L. Peter, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at his home in Anderson Township in Perry County. He was born in that same home on October 1, 1920, to the late August E. Peter and Mary A. (Hagedorn) Peter. The youngest of thirteen children, Charles was preceded in death by six brothers, Lawrence, Edward, Norbert, Albert, Aloysius and Francis Leo in infancy; six sisters, Clara Hagedorn, Catherine Hauser, Freida Hubert, Agnes Lasher, Cecilia Boerste and Alberta Gehlhausen. Charles was a 1939 graduate of Tell City High School. On July 3, 1945, at St. Mark Catholic Church, he married the former Uneda Meunier, who died on March 13, 2001. A lifelong Perry County farmer and dairyman, he also took pride in his work in timber management. He was the recipient of the Louisville Courier Journal Tom Wallace Forestry Award in 1981 and 1986. He was a member of the Indiana Tree Farm Association for fifty-six years, and had served thirty years on the board of directors of the Agriculture Stabilization Committee Service (ASCS) in Perry County. His family home was named a Hoosier Homestead Farm by the Indiana Historical Bureau of the Indiana Department of Commerce for being occupied by the same family for over one hundred years. He enjoyed spending his time there, especially walking its many trails and pathways. Charles served as trustee of Anderson Township for eight years, served on the first board of directors of AndTro water and was one of the original Anderson Township Volunteer Firemen. He was the oldest member of St. Mark Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Chapter # 1172. Charles is survived by daughters, Karen A. Dozza (Mike), Indianapolis, Linda Peters, London, England and Patty Steinsberger (Dan), New Albany; sons, Charles W. Peter (Irma), Anchorage, Alaska, Dennis L. Peter (Lana), and Mark E. Peter (Janet) both of Tell City. He has eleven grandchildren, Jerry and Chad Peter, Shelly Goodrich, Melissa Myers, Tashia McCallister, Alisa and Marcus Peter, Jason and Eric Dozza, Kristi Scott and Peter Steinsberger; five great grandchildren, Jordan, Sidney and Nathan Scott, Emma and Daniel Goodrich. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at St. Mark Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Peter officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00PM on Monday and from 9:00 until 10:30AM on Tuesday at Huber Funeral Home, 1139 12th Street, Tell City. A Knights of Columbus memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Monday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mark School Roof Fund.
