Tell City, Indiana - Charles E. Houghland, Sr., 87, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at Golden Living Center, surrounded by his family. He was born in Boonville, Indiana, on July 11, 1923. His parents were the late Frank and Lana (Jones) Houghland. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Tom Houghland and Eddie Joe, in infancy, and a sister, Diana Raven. Charlie married Elsie McMahan on October 16, 1948. She survives him. Charlie retired after 44 years with Tell City Chair Company. He was a World War II U.S. Air Air Corp.veteran with lifetime memberships in theVeterans of Foreign Wars Post #2939 and American Legion Post #213, where he was active with their funeral details. Charlie was also a member of First United Methodist Church and Walking Blood Bank. He was a former volunteer fireman and driver for Perry County Ambulance. He enjoyed volunteering with Boy Scouts and coaching baseball. Charlie was an avid Tell City Marksmen fan and was a member of Tell City High School's chain gang, where he marked yardage during high school football games for over 49 years. Charlie was know for telling jokes and he never met a stranger. He loved Christmastime and enjoyed being one of Santa's helpers. Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Elsie, his daughter, Linda Rogier and her husband Tim, Tell City; his sons, Steve Houghland and his wife Judy, Fulda; Charles Houghland, Jr. and his wife, Mary, Tell City; Karl Houghland and his wife, Kay, Tell City; a sister, Margaret Knoop, Tell City; eight grandchildren, Kelly Davis, Kasey Gaynor, Courtney Lathrop, Chaz, Jarrod, Brady, Katie and Lydia Houghland and six great grandchildren for whom Charlie adored. He also had several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 18, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, 10th and Mozart Streets, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturday and from 10:00 until 12:30 on Sunday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. There will be military graveside rites conducted by the VFW and American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to Tell City High School Athletic Department or Alzheimer's Foundation.
