Tell City, Indiana Calvin J. Hartz, 82, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville. He was born in Cannelton, February 14, 1933, son of the late Edward and Mary (Minto) Hartz. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Edward "Bud" Hartz and Magnus Hartz and sister, Evelyn Ziegler. A U.S. Navy veteran, Calvin served on the USS Lexington. Cal was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #1172, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1424, American Legion Post #213, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2939, where he served faithfully as commander of the funeral detail. Calvin was a 1951graduate of Tell City High School, where he was a member of the football team. He was united in marriage on June 29, 1957 at St. Paul Catholic Church to the former Betty Peter. He was a self-employed barber for over 35 years, retiring in 1997. Calvin also worked at Maxon Marine and Branchville Correctional Facility. Cal met his future wife through their mutual love of dancing. He enjoyed music, rabbit hunting, fishing, golf and spending time with family and friends. He was an avid Indiana basketball and St. Louis Cardinal fan. Calvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Hartz; son, Steven Hartz (Vickie), San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Phyllis Hartz, Evansville, Indiana; sisters, Virginia Nelson (Vernel "Dude"), Tell City, Indiana and Ruth Minnette, Evansville, Indiana; four grandchildren, Owen, Evan, Jennifer and Justin Hartz, and two great grandchildren, Jon and Jake. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, October 24, 2015, at St. Paul Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, where the V.F.W. Post #2939 will conduct military graveside rites. Rev. Dennis Duvelius will officiate. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 8:00PM on Friday and from 8:30 until 9:30 AM Saturday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel. There will be a Moose memorial service on Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church or VFW funeral detail.
