Bertha Luecke

Bertha (Betty) Hoffman Luecke, 87, of Memphis, Tennessee, died on July 25, 2015 in Memphis, TN with her daughters by her side, and is now home with the Lord. A memorial mass and celebration will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM. at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Tell City, Indiana. Betty was born on July 21, 1928 in Santa Claus, Indiana, the second child of Alvin and Lena Hoffman. Betty graduated from Dale High School in 1946. Betty worked at General Electric in Tell City as a loyal employee for 42 years, retiring at age 60 in 1988. In 1949 she married Leo Luecke who preceded Betty in death on July 19, 1991. Betty and Leo raised their family of two daughters in Tell City and Betty remained there after her husband's death until 1999 when she relocated to Memphis, Tennessee to live with her daughter, Cheryl Cooley. Betty was a member of Saint Paul's Church and Daughters of Isabella in Tell City and The Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in Memphis, TN. An avid gardener, she enjoyed canning, and providing a hearty kitchen for family and friends. Betty enjoyed all types of craftwork, especially needlework, sewing and painting. Leo and Betty were pet lovers, they raised several breeds of dogs over the years. They dabbled in rental property throughout the years which was sold after Leo's death. A talented card player, Betty also loved watching basketball games. She is survived by her two daughters Cheryl Cooley of Memphis and Brenda Sawyer and her husband John Sawyer of Lexington, Kentucky. Betty has three grandsons, one granddaughter, and three great-grand sons who holds her dearly in their hearts. Cheryl has two sons, Betty's oldest grandchild David Miller, his wife Catherine, and their children Chase and Nathan of Tuscumbia, Alabama and Cheryl's youngest son, Jeff Miller of Memphis, TN. Brenda's has one son, Aaron and Natalie Sawyer and their son Hayes of Nashville, TN and Brenda's daughter Rachel Sawyer, also of Nashville, TN. Betty is also survived by her brother Alvin Hoffman and his wife Ruth Hoffman of Santa Claus, Indiana and many nieces and nephews. Her two sisters, Julia Fowler and Phyllis Messmer preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Luecke Chapel, (Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers) C/O Vince Luecke in New Boston, Indiana or St. Paul's Catholic Church. Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.
