Arthur Young

September 15, 1925 — March 16, 2014

Cannelton, Indiana Arthur L. Young, 88, died Sunday March 16, 2014, at his home in Pendleton, with his wife by his side. He was born September 15, 1925, to the late William and Laura (Lupp) Young in Cannelton, Indiana. Art was preceded in death by his parents, his half brother Orville Young, his son David, his brother Bill and two sisters Kathryn Gruver and Lavera Bubenzer. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years Edna May (Parr) Young and a daughter Lisa Smelser (Joe) of Pendleton, IN. He also has a granddaughter, Jessica Young of Evanston. A 1943 graduate of Cannelton High School, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, and served his country during WWII. During his time on Iwo Jima, Art saw the marines raise the flag. Later he painted a picture of this scene to show his marine buddies at one of their reunions. After returning from the war, Art married Edna May Parr on June 21st, 1953. They lived in Tell City after they were married until they bought 8 acres from his mother. Art built a garage for the new couple to live in while he built their new home. Art and Edna May enjoyed square dancing and water skiing. Art also enjoyed fishing, and painting land scapes. He also enjoyed his family and taking vacations. He enjoyed picnicking and swimming. Art loved to plant flowers in his yard. Art was also a big IU basketball fan. After moving to Pendleton about seven years ago, he became a Pendleton Arabians and a Colts fan fairly quickly. He enjoyed going on the high school basketball field trips with his son- in-law Joe. Art retired from NSA in 1985. He was a brick mason by trade. Art never met a stranger, and always loved to hear or tell a good joke. He loved a good laugh. Art was a very active member in the Shrine Club, Eastern Star, and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of The First United Methodist Church in Cannelton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City Chapel, with burial in New Cliff Cemetery in Cannelton, where there will military graveside rites conducted by VFW. Pastor Paul Alvey will officiate. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a Tell City Masonic memorial service at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to St Vincent Anderson Hospice 2015 Jackson St. Anderson, IN 46016.
