Tell City, Indiana
Alice P. Wittmer, 98, passed away on August 28, 2023 at Oakwood Health Campus.
She was born in St. Henry, Indiana on November 12, 1924, the ninth of ten children of Louis and Philomena (Henze) Arnold.
Alice was a 1943 graduate of Tell City High School. On November 19, 1946 she was united in marriage to Walter P. Wittmer. They were married for 56 years until his passing on December 12, 2002.
Alice retired from the Perry County Welfare Department in April 1986 after 22 years of clerical services. She formerly worked at Perry County Memorial Hospital and the Perry County Courthouse. She also was the office manager of Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles in the 1960's.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Catholic Church and helped establish the St. Paul Catholic Church Library in 1990, where she also volunteered. Alice was a member and Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #213, member and Past Regent of the Daughters of Isabella #710, and in 1984 was former president of the Southwestern Regional Welfare Clerical Association. She was a retired senior volunteer of Lincoln Hills Development Corporation.
Alice enjoyed hearing stories and seeing pictures of her great grandchildren's busy lives. She was a babysitter for her great granddaughters, Hayley and Brooklyn, as long as her health allowed. She loved the McDonald's coffee club, collecting antiques and dolls, reading and playing Bingo. At the age of 98, Alice still wore her necklaces, bracelets and sweaters every day. Her family and her church were very important to her.
Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was selfless and always put her family and others before herself. She was close to all of her immediate family as well as her siblings and their families.
Surviving are her daughters, Tonya Hafele (Rick Weiss), Cannelton and Sheila Hargis (Jim), Derby; grandchildren, Jeremy Hafele (Beth), Heather Wroe (Brad), Erin Rogier (Jeff) and Kenton Hargis (Anna); great grandchildren, Matthew and Jacob Hafele, Josh and Alyssa Rogier, Hayley and Brooklyn Wroe and Eden Grace Hargis. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Walt Wittmer; sisters, Rosalyn Kluesner, Doretha Horlander, Esther Schank, Mildred Williams, Virginia Aldridge and Louise Smith; brothers, Othmar, Ray, Herbert and Carl Arnold.
Alice's daughters and family were privileged to have her for 98 years. They deeply appreciated the love and care that Oakwood Health Campus gave her, especially the Legacy Lane nurses and staff.
