She was a woman before her time. She dedicated her life to educating children whether they were her own or those who lived in the community she loved and served. ""Miss Alice"" began her teaching career as a second grade teacher at Cannelton Elementary School. She worked there from 1946-1948. She took some time off to begin her family but returned to teaching in Troy, Indiana where she instructed special education students. She then took another maternity leave but was requested by name to join the Tell City School District as a homebound instructor during the 1964-65 school year. In January of 1966, the Superintendent of the Cannelton School District personally called her to return to her home school to teach once again. She continued working for the Cannelton City Schools from 1966 until her retirement in 1990 balancing both family and career. ""Miss Alice"" began the first Kindergarten classes in Cannelton. She also pioneered the Cannelton Elementary Fall Festival Queen Coronation which has become a community traditional event. This year marked the 64th Annual Fall Festival and was the first year ""Miss Alice"" missed since she initiated it. Mrs. Bennett loved to follow sports - especially the Bulldogs and the Cincinnati Reds. She belonged to the Cannelton Booster Club and attended all of the games proudly wearing her black and gold. She also loved following her grandchildren's sporting events as well. She was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Cannelton; she sang in the church choir there and also participated in the Women's Guild. She was a member and past president of the Harry G. Myers Post #142 American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers' Association. She served on the Cannelton Library Board. Her hobbies were raising children, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing euchre, and shopping on Saturdays with her family.
